hMG (Human Menopausal Gonadotropin)

Hormones & fertility FDA-approved drug

Gonadotropin (FSH and LH activity) · also known as HMG, Human Menopausal Gonadotropin, Menotropins, Menopur

Menotropins supply follicle-stimulating and luteinizing activity together. The US-approved product is labeled for stimulating multiple follicle development in women undergoing assisted reproduction. Male hypogonadotropic hypogonadism protocols pair an FSH-active product with hCG, and hMG is one of the options studied for that purpose.

Commonly reported reconstitution steps

  1. Vials are usually brought to room temperature (about 15-20 minutes) first.
  2. 1 mL of 0.9% sodium chloride (saline) is added slowly down the inside wall of the 75 IU vial.
  3. The vial is swirled gently until clear, not shaken.
  4. This gives 75 IU/mL. Mixed vials are typically labeled with the date and refrigerated.

Storage

Before mixing: The label describes powder stored refrigerated or at room temperature (3-25 °C) and protected from light.

After mixing: The label describes using the solution immediately after reconstitution and discarding unused material.

How it works

FSH activity acts on ovarian follicles in women and on Sertoli cells in men, while LH activity (together with any co-administered hCG) drives gonadal steroid production. Spermatogenesis in men with gonadotropin deficiency generally needs both signals.

Researched for

  • Labeled for follicle development in women undergoing assisted reproductive technology cycles.
  • Studied with hCG for inducing spermatogenesis in men with hypogonadotropic hypogonadism; systematic reviews of gonadotropin regimens report sperm appearing in most treated men, with FSH-active products added to hCG.
  • The male-fertility use is off-label in the US.

Notes

  • The US product is supplied with 0.9% sodium chloride diluent.
  • The 1 mL volume is a reference-chart convenience; the IU potency is separate from syringe unit markings.
  • Label-reported effects in women include abdominal pain, headache, injection-site reactions and ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome.
  • Approved products come with their own labeled preparation instructions; the reconstitution figures here apply to research vials.
